Our recycling unit is now protected with concrete lego blocks
Building protection, safety first, value for money and a fast build time is why Link Recycling selected BlockWalls to supply their concrete lego blocks
Link Recycling is a fully licensed waste transfer station based in Huyton, Merseyside. The business specialises in the recycling of PVCU window, plastics and commercial waste.
The free PVCU window collection and recycling service is available across the UK. Once collected the material is sorted at the recycling plant.
Processing hundreds of tonnes per annum the sorting unit required a low cost solution to house pre-sorted waste whilst protecting the fabricated walls of the building.
Traditional breeze-block construction was expensive and time consuming. Operations Director Ben Donnelly turned to BlockWalls for advice.
THE CHALLENGE
The existing fabricated steel structure housing the PVCU waste stock and sortation equipment is in a fast moving industrial environment. Heavy plant equipment including loaders and small bulldozers are used to unload and compact waste.
The risk was expensive damage to the property caused by collisions and thus there was a need to load up the plastic against a solid object. Building blocks would have broken up quickly and would have been an on going maintance problem. They also need time to lay and set causing disturbance and downtime.
This daily movement and the sheer weight of stock caused structural hazards and risks when pushed against the walls of the main unit. Link Recycling required a robust bay structure to be built within the unit that could withstand the daily movement and pressure when moving the PVCU material.
THE SOLUTION
Virtabloc block were delivered and installed within a day saving approximately 5 days in build time and labour costs. Each block weighs 1162 kg therefore provided a robust and solid bay designed to take the constant impact and pressure exerted from heavy plant.
From a health and safety perspective the Virtabloc wall has provided a solid and reliable solution, improving the working environment for Link Recycling staff. Site supervisor Adrian Bannon commented “The protection of visitors and site operatives is a business critical issue for any organisation. The blocks created clearly designated pathways and help keep the site organised, safe and tidy.”
Secondly the construction and production methods of the Virtabloc solution support the values of the recycling industry. By definition Block Walls provide industry standard solutions using over 87% recycled material.
